What is Bikes Welcome doing now we have some money in the bank?
Tell the world that "Yes, I bike!" with this awesome t-shirt from Bikes Welcome.
Is bike parking just a bit of infrastructure, or is it a strong social message about how we use places and spaces, and the choices we support?
What do the Village People have to do with Bikes Welcome? New Zealand is a collection of villages. Sometimes we are good at looking beyond the boundaries of our village, and sometimes we aren't. When it comes to biking, most of the challenges we face on a daily basis are local, so we look for local solutions. Bikes Welcome will be a local solution. To get Bikes Welcome up and running we need to share the costs among our villages, hence the Pledge Me campaign.
Is bike parking the 'canary in the mine' when it comes to gauging how our local authorities view bike use: whether they see cycling as sport and recreation or a transport mode for everyday activities? Are we missing an opportunity to change behaviour and realise the benefits?
Congestion, pollution, health, quality of life: challenges we face. Using bikes as active transport could be a significant part of the solution and bring great benefits to us as individuals and as a society. But how does bike parking help get more people on bikes for everyday trips, and what does Bikes Welcome want to do about it?
Is bike parking just about somewhere to lock or lean your bike? Or is it about hearts and minds as well as infrastructure? What role can bike parking play on getting more people riding more often?
Our Pledge Me campaign is all about you - getting your support, and frankly, your money. And getting you to tell your world about us too. And getting you good bike parking.... So we can't ask that of you without answering some of your questions first!
To be honest, I thought I'd invented an original concept when I came up with the idea for BikesWelcome.... but it turns out it has been done before. That is good news because it means it works. Read on to find out how it is done elsewhere, and how we'll do it even better here.... with your help!
Bikes Welcome are launching a Pledge Me crowd-funding campaign on January 23rd. Why crowd-funding? Because of who we are, who we aren't and what we want to do.
